A-2 Jacket “The Betty J” B-17G 42-31072, 613th Bomb Squadron, 401st Bomb Group (H) 8th Air Force
Bryan M. Schotts was born in Laurel, Mississippi on October 29, 1922. He wore the A-2 jacket during the Second World War while piloting the “The Betty J” during combat missions in the European Theater.
“The Betty J” received its name from Schott’s childhood sweetheart and future wife of 65 years Betty Jean. “The Betty J” was the only aircraft of the original 44 B-17Gs in the 401st Bomb Group (H) to return to the United States, all others were lost in combat.
Schotts became a career Air Force Officer attaining the rank of Lt. General, he was the Commander of the 15th Air Force at March Air Force Base when he retired in 1978.
